Analysis and typical applications of common steel grades

08AL——Low carbon steel, with a nominal carbon content of 0.08%, and the actual carbon content is between 0.05 and 0.11%, similar to grade SAE1008. When it is used for forming without heat treatment, there are also cases where SPCC is used as a substitute. 08AL sheet products are often used in the manufacture of electrical appliances, furniture, automobiles, electrical equipment housings, hardware rails, door hinges and other fields.

45 steel——high-quality carbon structural steel, as the most commonly used medium carbon quenched and tempered steel, it exhibits good comprehensive mechanical properties. Typical applications include the manufacture of high-strength moving parts such as turbine impellers, compressor pistons, shafts, gears, racks and worms.

40Cr——It is an alloy structural steel. After quenching and tempering, it can show excellent comprehensive mechanical properties and low temperature impact toughness. Its comprehensive performance is better than that of 45 steel. The hardenability of 40Cr makes it an ideal choice for manufacturing medium-speed and medium-load parts, such as gears, shafts, spindles, crankshafts, spindles, sleeves, etc.

65Mn——A commonly used spring steel, after heat treatment and cold drawing hardening, it shows high strength and good toughness. 65Mn is suitable for manufacturing small-sized flat and round springs and other types of springs. The plate can also be used to manufacture knives, leaf springs, wear-resistant parts with low requirements, etc.

Q235A——Laoye’s A3 steel, a carbon structural steel, is famous for its high plasticity, toughness and excellent welding and cold stamping properties. Q235A is widely used in parts and welded structures with general requirements. The upgraded grade Q345A (16Mn) in terms of structural strength is a low-alloy high-strength steel. Although its overall performance is greatly improved, it is more troublesome than Q235A in terms of welding. The suffix of this series is divided into four grades: A, B, C, and D, which represent low-temperature performance. The highest grade, Q235D, meets the low-temperature impact test requirements of -20°C.

Cт3CП——St 3SP, often abbreviated as 3SP in international inquiries, the original CIS brand, belongs to the GOST standard system, similar to the national standard Q235, see the analysis of Q235.

0Cr18Ni9——Similar to grade 304, as the most commonly used stainless steel, it has a wide range of applications, such as food equipment, chemical equipment and kitchen utensils. Upgraded grade 316, with increased nickel content and improved corrosion resistance, is more expensive and is often used in high-end kitchenware and medical equipment.

Usibor1500P——hot forming material, similar to HC950/1300HC. It has good hardenability and is produced using a special hot stamping process, with heat treatment completed in the mold. This material requires a combination of processes to achieve specific properties. It has excellent stamping performance and formability, and is widely used. It is suitable for the manufacture of high-strength automotive safety parts, such as automotive A and B pillars, special reinforcements, etc.

DT4E—— National Standard Electromagnetic Pure Iron (GB/T 6983), as the name implies, is pure iron with relatively low strength and hardness, good ductility and toughness, good corrosion resistance, excellent electromagnetic properties, and good coercive force performance. It is used to manufacture core components of electrical equipment such as transformers, inductors, and motors. There are four grades under this standard: DT4, DT4A, DT4E, and DT4C, among which DT4C has the best electromagnetic performance.

ASP-23——Swedish powder metallurgy high-speed steel, containing a high proportion of alloying elements such as tungsten, cobalt, chromium and vanadium, is suitable for long-life cutting tools due to its uniform carbide distribution, high toughness and easy processing. Typical applications include punches, deep drawing dies, drilling dies, milling cutters and shear blades and other types of cutting tools that require long working time. Due to its high hardness and wear resistance, ASP-23 is also suitable for manufacturing wear-resistant parts of stamping dies, plastic molds and die-casting molds.

SKD12——Japanese standard cold working die steel, American standard A681 A2, also known as A2 steel. It is favored for its high carbon, high chromium characteristics and good wear resistance. It has high alloying elements and high requirements for heat treatment. Proper treatment can obtain good wear resistance. It is mostly used to manufacture cold punching dies, punches, blanking dies, cold heading dies, punches and dies of cold extrusion dies, drill bushings, gauges, wire drawing dies, stamping dies, thread rolling plates, drawing dies, and cold pressing dies for powder metallurgy, etc., which are subject to small impact loads and require high wear resistance.

DC53——Japanese high-strength and toughness cold-working die steel, famous for its high hardness and toughness after high-temperature tempering. After high-temperature (520-530) tempering, it can reach a high hardness of 62-63HRC. Its usage scenarios are similar to SKD12, and some indicators are better than SKD12.

INCOLOY® alloy 800—— American Standard UNS N08800, Incoloy alloy, a Ni-Cr alloy, 800 alloy still has good strength, high oxidation resistance and carburization resistance in high temperature atmosphere. 800 alloy has good corrosion resistance in liquid phase environment. Even if exposed to high temperature for a long time, 800 alloy can maintain a stable austenite structure. 800 alloy can be used to manufacture process pipelines, heat exchangers, carburizing equipment, armor of heating elements, and steam generator pipelines in nuclear power plants.

C-22HS®——HASTELLOY® Hastelloy alloy is an all-around Ni-Cr-Mo alloy with excellent corrosion resistance for both oxidizing and reducing acids, and can be heat treated to obtain higher strength. In the oil and gas industry, it is used in applications requiring very high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. The product forms used include rods, billets, and tubes (seamless and welded tubes). This alloy is particularly suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure wells. Compared with other nickel-based alloys, it can be made into components with very high strength levels. It can meet the requirements of Level VII environment (5 g/l sulfur element, to 401ºF (205ºC)) and the highest environment level, that is, the enhanced version of NACE Level VII environment (25% NaCl+1000 psi (7000 kPa) CO2 + 1000 psi (7000 kPa) H2S at 550ºF (288ºC)) in the NACE MRO175/ISO 15156 specification. The maximum hardness and yield strength are HRc43 and 205 ksi respectively.
